Why I Started Ashes to Leaves
When I left the military, the transition back into civilian life was much harder than I expected. I realized that after years of structured service, many of us struggle to find that same sense of safety net and purpose once we hang up the uniform. I started Ashes to Leaves because I wanted to create a place for veterans to land—a space where we can find our footing again, build something lasting with our hands, and rediscover a sense of belonging through honest work and community service.

Turning Loss Into Something Living
Ashes to Leaves honors my sister and the deeply held belief that something meaningful can grow from grief. The core of this work is the idea that we can turn ashes into something living, useful, and lasting, moving forward with a sense of humble hope for what we can cultivate together.
Why the Garden Matters
The garden is about so much more than just the vegetables we pull from the soil. It is a place built on the strength of relationships and the simple, quiet dignity of having a purpose. When we work the earth, we aren't just growing food; we are growing a sense of belonging and a set of practical skills that stay with a person long after they leave the garden gate.
It matters because it creates real access to fresh, healthy food for our neighbors, but even more than that, it provides a common ground. It is a place where people from all walks of life—veterans, seniors, and students—can work alongside one another. In the end, it's about having somewhere to go where you are needed and somewhere where you can see the direct result of your own two hands.
The Vision
The goal is to grow the first community garden in Bolivia, North Carolina, into a larger network of community and memorial gardens. We envision these spaces serving veterans, families, seniors, and neighbors, creating a legacy of purpose and relationship. Our long-term hope is to expand into additional gardens and community projects that continue to turn grief into growth and service into connection.
A Message From Joseph
Thank you for taking the time to read about our mission here at Ashes to Leaves. This garden is more than a project to me—it is a community coming together to create something lasting from the ground up. Whether you are a fellow veteran looking for purpose, a neighbor wanting to learn, or someone who simply believes in the power of a shared harvest, you are welcome here. I invite you to be a part of what grows from this soil. Your presence and support are what make this garden live.
